Emotional Insecurity and Privacy Concerns of an Addict in Treatment

Emotional Insecurity and Privacy Concerns of an Addict in Treatment

When someone decides to get help at a rehab center, staff expects him or her to feel an array of mixed emotions. After all, going to rehab is a big decision and will change a person’s life forever. From the initial call to the first step inside the facility, it’s common for an addict to be scared of the unknown, nervous of the unexpected and worried about opening up to others about something that is so personal and close to them.

Our rehab center in Chiang Rai staffs several individuals who have battled an addiction in the past and have overcome it. Many of these people know what it’s like to go to rehab and also understand some of the privacy concerns you or a loved one may have. And so, to better help you understand how we address and value emotional and physical privacy, we would like explain what these things mean to us.

Physical Privacy: You will be able to recover with anonymity

Many addicts and their families discuss their concerns about privacy during treatment. What this refers to is who will be able to find out about anyone staying at Serenity Chiang Rai and what information is made available. In fact, as a private Thailand rehab center, no information about any client is shared with anyone outside of the rehab. This includes government personnel, immigration or medical professionals (unless there is a serious medical emergency and even then information is minimal). We have implemented a “gag” order amongst all staff which means they cannot, nor do they want to, discuss who or what is going on at the addiction facility.

Should anyone contact our Chiang Rai rehab center for information about any clientele, we will require written permission from the individual before contact is made. If this is not available, our center will not acknowledge the person exists. We also have a policy that no photos or videos are allowed to be made without express permission. This ensures all men and women at the center receive optimal privacy.

Protecting Emotions By Keeping Things In

When someone thinks of privacy at rehab, they often only consider the actual physical privacy. However, there is also emotional privacy which some individuals will value, but doing so can hinder treatment.

When a person has an addiction, they have likely learned how to keep everything inside. Whether or not they really wanted to, protecting their own feelings from the outside world has kept them from going crazy with harsh judgment and criticism. On top of that, there may have been little to no support from family and friends around them. When reaching out to people they thought they could rely on becomes a failure time and time again, this person starts to lose trust and faith in other human beings. When it comes time to sit in a group therapy session and open up about addiction, it can be a deeply rooted struggle which comes with a lot of sensitivity and fear.

Addiction Professionals are Prepared for This

Part of the reason someone goes to rehab is because there is constant support and guidance. When there is an issue with emotional privacy, trained staff will address it in a healthy way conducive to recovery. In general, this privacy blocker is only temporary and eases with time as a person starts to see that others at the rehab are letting go and opening up as well as, the reassurance from staff.

Keeping the Thoughts Private

Coinciding with emotional privacy is the privacy of one’s own thoughts. Addicts can be the harshest judgers of their self. Many also have built a stigma on what they think they should be. These, often negative and scrutinizing thoughts, can create a defense mechanism and lead to the belief that they should not be shared with others – even a counsellor or therapist.

A rehab center is the best place to release these thoughts no matter how crazy, chaotic or terrible one may think they are. This ability to express the true self is what starts to heal these emotional discomforts and insecurities leading to a healthy, long term recovery.

Siam Rehab Thailand Respects Your Privacy and Emotions

We pride ourselves in being one of the leading rehabs in South East Asia and Thailand. Our entire team understands and values all privacy concerns of every client – emotional, physical and spiritual. This mindset allows each person to be as comfortable as possible while opening up in an honest and healthy way.

8 Facts about Ketamine Use, Abuse and Addiction

8 Facts about Ketamine Use, Abuse and Addiction

You may have heard of ketamine, or special K, but you might not know much about it. Many people associate the drug with a horse tranquilizer because that is what it is currently primarily used for. Developed during the Vietnam War as an anesthetic, alternative to PCP, and as a safer painkiller, it virtually disappeared from hospital settings for nearly two decades. But what about Ketamine abuse?

8 Facts about Ketamine Abuse and Addiction

You may have heard of ketamine, or special K, but you might not know much about it. Many people associate the drug with a horse tranquilizer because that is what it is currently primarily used for. Developed during the Vietnam War as an anesthetic, alternative to PCP, and as a safer painkiller, ketamine virtually disappeared from hospital settings for nearly two decades. That said, veterinarians still use the drug to put larger animals to sleep while they undergo surgery. Doctors will also employ the drug during surgical procedures in humans who have respiratory problems.

Ketamine is a powerful anesthetic which distorts perceptions of sight and sound while promoting the feeling if detachment from the environment and the self. It can cause a person to be unable to move or even speak, let alone realize what is going on around them. This intense dream like state, and the ability to produce amnesia of current events, makes it not only a desired drug of abuse, but also a secondary date rape drug after GHB.

Today, ketamine research is becoming increasingly trendy particularly for its ability to help people who are terminally ill or severely depressed. Outside the world of medical research, ketamine seems to go in and out of trends of abuse. Once more, ketamine abuse is on the rise with interests having been sparked by coverage of the drug on the television and internet. Ketamine is commonly abused in teens and adults under thirty as a rave or club drug; quickly surpassing other substances like LSD, GHB and ecstasy. While it may be a drug that can be useful for medical purposes, it comes with a lot of risk when it is abused. Because many people are not familiar with ketamine, it’s important to understand this powerful and highly addictive drug.

ketamine use

What You Might Not Know

  • Ketamine is used for Medical Purposes

It produces less cardiovascular and respiratory depression than other drugs like opioids. Emergency medical technicians are not reluctant to use ketamine to calm or sedate out of control patients while transporting them to the hospital, control pain in traumatic injuries where internal bleeding is not recognized or to induce a hypnotic state (for example removing someone who is in pain and trapped in a car crash).

  • Could Be Used to Help Depression

Currently, there is research being carried out which suggests when monitored, ketamine could help severely depressed people who are non-responsive to other more formal treatments. When it is used for this purpose, it will be injected. Research shows that it can decrease the depressive symptoms for up to two weeks. Like any mental health disorder, the individual should attempt to reach the core cause of their depression through different therapies or healing techniques.

  • Illegal Use of the Drug is on the Rise

Since 2010, special K has become one of the most popular club drugs in the U.K., France and the U.S. The drug can cause intense hallucinations and a deep mental trip which is one of the reasons younger generations are opting to use it.

  • A lot of People Believe it is Not Addictive

Even though ketamine can be classified as a psychedelic, the idea that it is not addictive is just a myth. It is not only a psychedelic but pain reliever. It is associated with habitual behaviors, cravings, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. When put together, these are the core things which make up an addiction.

  • Effects of Using can be Deadly

Ketamine abuse can not only cause delirium, confusion and a manic like behavior, but it can also cause respiratory failure, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, stroke heart attack or coma. As tolerance grows and the abuse continues there is a growing risk of overdose and death.

  • The Withdrawal is said to be One of the Worst

Talk to anyone who has been to a ketamine rehab and they’ll likely tell you the withdrawal was absolutely terrible. In fact, addicts who have had more than one drug addiction which includes ketamine have been noted to say the symptoms are unlike those of other substances. This in itself is a primary reason to seek the help of a treatment program. Many of the withdrawal symptoms are psychological. Severe depression, irritability, insomnia, restlessness, feelings of isolation or being trapped and suicidal thoughts is all common experiences addicts of ketamine discuss. The intensity of these can be so extreme that the risk of relapsing is high.

  • Ketamine Bladder Syndrome can occur with Repeated Abuse

Regular doses of ketamine can lead to a newly discovered health issue called ketamine bladder syndrome. This is a painful condition which requires long term ongoing treatment. People with ketamine bladder syndrome may struggle to hold urine and develop ulcerations in the bladder.

  • Recreational Use in Asia is Rising Rapidly

In Asia, ketamine abuse is on the rise, and rapidly growing. Countries like China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia have all seen an increase in recreational abuse as well as, hospital room visits due to ketamine overdoses. While many of the local drug enforcement agencies are working hard to decrease this trend, the numbers are proving that it is easier said than done.

Going to Rehab for Ketamine

A ketamine addiction requires the help and support of a well organized treatment program. This is primarily due to the strong psychological addiction which occurs from using ketamine.

Alcoholism Effects on the Family

Alcoholism Effects on the Family

Alcoholism not only affects the user, but those around them as well. It can cause more emotional, psychological and physical consequences on the family than other influences, both external and internal. Alcoholism effects on the family.

Alcoholisms’ Detrimental Effects on the Family

Alcoholism effects on the family not only affects the user, but those around them as well. It can cause more emotional, psychological and physical consequences on the family than other influences, both external and internal. The short term impact and long term implications affect each family member differently. A child may suffer a stunt in cognitive development; whereas a spouse may experience extreme anxiety or depression.

A spouse, partner, sibling, parent or child will be affected in some way when they spend a considerable amount of time around a person with an alcohol addiction. Over time as the addiction progresses the personalities of each family member will begin to alter. It is these alterations which cause the family of an alcoholic to adjust to unhealthy and unproductive lifestyles. These changes can be a result of a conscious or unconscious decision. In any case, when these destructive coping methods take place and are untreated, the family unit starts to break down.

Alcoholism not only affects the user, but those around them as well. It can cause more emotional, psychological and physical consequences on the family than other influences, both external and internal. Alcoholism effects on the family.

Alcoholism Effects Families From all Over the Globe

Recent studies out of the U.K. show that alcohol is the most destructive drug according to the harm it causes the abuser and their loved ones (crack cocaine and heroin follow). One of the primary reasons for this is alcohol is considerably accepted by a majority of adults and society in general. In the U.S. the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports at least one in four children are exposed to a family member with an addiction to alcohol.

Children of Parents Who Abuse Alcohol

Children of alcoholic parents are particularly affected because the substance typically becomes the number one thing in the drinkers’ life. Basic parental responsibilities like preparing meals and cleaning the house become neglected. Helping the child out with homework, encouraging imaginative activities or showing vital affection and attention is pushed aside. A child may begin to compensate for deficiencies their parent has developed; they may become a surrogate “parent” to other younger siblings or as a coping method for their self.

They may feel like their parents alcoholism is their fault; especially if the parent is blaming the child for their addictive behavior. Younger children may have nightmares, cry frequently or withdrawal from friends and teachers. As they grow older, they may become a perfectionist, develop phobias or engage in risky behavior.

A child of an alcoholic parent may feel alone and isolated. They may have a hard time talking to sober adults about what is going on at home in fear of being punished. They may suffer from low self esteem or self image which can carry on well into adulthood.

At school, the child may struggle. They may be distracted with life at home and therefore neglect activities, studies or homework. On the other hand, the child may do exceedingly well at school and want to spend as much time as possible in this type of environment. They may tell teachers they don’t want to go home or participate in as many after school activities as possible.

Unfortunately, alcoholic parents have a high risk of abusing their child. This can be physical assault, emotional or sexual abuse. In many cases, these things go undetected. In serious cases, the child may go out of his or her way to ensure no one finds out about it. This is another way of coping with the situation at hand and not wanting to make it any worse than it already may be.

Alcoholism in Families Continues to Affect the Child Well Into Adulthood

Once a child of an alcoholic reaches adulthood, the alcoholism in the family could continue to impact their life. They may have relationship or trust issues and continued low self esteem. Depression, stress, anxiety, impulsive behavior and PTSD could all be an issue. With these feelings, it is not uncommon for a person to engage in risky behavior including drug or alcohol abuse. Keep in mind that substance abuse is not always the go to outlet; for example, sometimes the individual will become very work oriented and withdrawal from social life.

Spouses or Partners of Alcoholics

Alcoholism can have a profound effect on the spouse or partner of the addict. Mental and physical health problems can quickly arise as the stress of the addiction starts to weight in. As the alcoholic continues their abuse, the spouse may subconsciously begin to take on a caretaking role. They may get a second job to pay the bills because the alcoholic lost his or her job. They may carry out all the household chores or cover up for the addict when they cannot show up for work or an obligatory task. This is not only a coping method, but also a form of enabling. All these things can lead to resentment, lack of self worth and both mental and physical exhaustion.

The marriage or partnership may begin to suffer. Communication may become nonexistence and there may be a reduction in intimacy and desire. Money may be spent on alcohol or alcohol related activities leading to anger, distress or even abuse. Divorce may be imminent if the alcoholic does not get treatment at a rehab center.

The Extended Family

The effects of alcohol often extend beyond the immediate family. Uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents may feel abandoned by the person they love. As they watch alcohol destroy the person’s life as well as, their family, they may be faced with emotions such as anger, anxiety, fear, guilt, concern and embarrassment. With these feelings, they may ignore or cut ties with the alcohol abuser.

What can family members do?

Treating an addiction to alcohol is complex and takes time. Moreover, as a general rule, the alcoholic must want to change. While it may seem like pleas of desperation from their loved ones may be the solution, it doesn’t always work. Alcohol is a powerful drug which can take a deep hold of the person. They must at least be able to recognize that there is a problem and as soon as they do, treatment can be a real option.
In the meantime, it is important that family members of an alcoholic help themselves. With the right approach and support, positive steps can be made to improve their own life.

If these are not what you are looking for, you may also want to consider group or individual counselling and specialized therapies like writing or art. It’s also important to educate yourself about alcohol addiction, rehab treatment and recovery. By understanding what these things entail, you will be able to answer any and all the addicts concerns or questions should they arise. Don’t forget to educate yourself on enabling or codependent behaviors and make an effort to stop these if you are actively engaging in them.
