Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Bendigo

As one of the major centres in rural Victoria, people of Bendigo have certain issues with drugs and alcohol. As well as worrying consumption statistics, there have also been a range of incidents caused by heavy drinking and illicit substance use. Being a smaller town, there are also some more unique problems such as a lack of local treatment facilities which prevent those addicted from getting support.

Drug Consumption within Bendigo

Statistics for drug use seem to be quite high within Bendigo. In 2021, there were 477 drug offences and 39.2 drug manufacturing or cultivation offences per 100,000 population according to the Bendigo Advertiser.

These figures were higher than the state average. The ABC News writes that local police have said these increases were due to better law enforcement rather than a surge in users.

While there is a problem with ice in Bendigo, local police say this isn’t the biggest issue in the area. Cannabis seems to be the most common drug amongst locals and some heroin has been seen according to the Bendigo Advertiser. Regarding amphetamine users, demographics have changed with many users coming from decent backgrounds.

While drugs have a negative social stigma worldwide, this has more of an effect in rural towns such as Bendigo. The Age writes about one local family who suffered in silence while their son got addicted to heroin.

Thanks to the city’s judgemental population, they were forced to hide the issue for fear that their son would have trouble finding work or somewhere to stay. As a result of this silence though, he ended up dying from a fatal overdose in a Melbourne carpark.

Alcohol Use and the Bendigo People

Bendigo has the highest rate of underage drinking in Victoria according to the Bendigo Advertiser. Health experts in the region say this isn’t surprising as poorer economic conditions and a disconnection from school have caused more teenagers to consume alcohol. This then leads to further impacts with regards to tertiary education and careers.

There have also been a number of cases with Bendigo adults consuming in excess. ABC News writes of a local man who crashed his car at an intersection. He recorded a blood alcohol level of four times the legal limit. Two women were injured in the accident as well.

The public service isn’t immune either. ABC News reported of a Bendigo councillor who issued an apology after being caught drink driving. Instead of waiting for a taxi, he got behind the wheel, was caught and lost his licence. Another story in the Herald Sun tells of a police cover-up involving an officer who crashed his car while under the influence. Seven police left the force and four were disciplined for their roles in this crime.

Treatment Options Rehab in Bendigo Area

Despite being a fairly large rural centre, Bendigo is still small enough to suffer from a lack of drug and alcohol rehab centres. There are really only two government-run facilities available. The Youth Support + Advocacy Service (YSAS) is found a 8 King Street just off Mitchell Street and runs a youth outreach program, home-based withdrawal program and primary health service. It works with those aged 12 to 21 who are having trouble with drug and alcohol use, abuse or dependence.

The second option is Headspace which is located on Pall Mall. Run by the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, this program offers early intervention to those aged 12 to 21 years old which makes it as easy as possible for those having trouble sorting out issues affecting their wellbeing when it comes to drug and alcohol use.

Seeking Support Outside of Bendigo

As there are no publicly-funded options for those over 21 in Bendigo and private clinics can be quite expensive, locals may have to be creative when it comes to treatment. There are a number of programmes around Australia as well as English speaking overseas options.

Many Australian’s are not aware that they can use their Superannuation to cover part or all of the costs for treatment locally or at a treatment centre in Asia.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Albury-Wodonga

What is available for drug and alcohol rehab in Albury-Wodonga? Also what are the problems the town is experiencing?

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Albury-Wodonga

Straddled across the NSW/Victoria border, the twin town of Albury-Wodonga is a rural spot that has a dual problem with drug addiction and heavy drinking. From the trafficking of illicit substances to minor alcohol-related incidents, this is a destination that covers the whole spectrum. The fact that there are few rehab services available locally exacerbates the problem as well, especially for those who are dependant on these substances.

Drug Issues in Albury-Wodonga

Both Albury and Wodonga seem to have similar issues with illicit substances with drug news coming out of each on a regular basis. For instance, The Border Mail writes that drug offences jumped 61% in 2012-13 from the previous year. This included 58 cultivating, trafficking and manufacturing offences and 157 possession offences. Another article in The Border Mail says that Wodonga paramedics were called out for five heroin-related jobs and 88 alcohol-related jobs in 2012-13. Statistics in Albury are also on the rise, police say.

Drug seizures are also fairly common on both sides of the border. Star Community wrote about Wodonga police confiscating two kilograms of methamphetamines from a car travelling on the Hume Highway. The drugs had a value of about $600,000. The Border Mail also writes about a raid in Albury where cannabis and methamphetamines were seized. Two men were arrested.

Locals aren’t taking this sort of thing sitting down and a number of forums have been held. One good example is found in ABC News where past ice users got together to speak about their experiences. Not only was this incredibly cathartic for everyone involved but it also exposed an issue that has remained hidden.

Rehab Albury Wodonga

Alcohol Use in Albury-Wodonga

Instances of alcoholism and related incidents can range from humorous to outright tragic in Albury-Wodonga. For the former, 3AW Breakfast wrote of a man called Cham Payne who had been called to court charged with alcohol-related assault. The case went for two weeks and he was eventually found guilty. On the other end of the spectrum, The Border Mail writes of a resident who suffered from alcoholism. Turned away from Albury Hospital and unable to find help locally, he moved to Canberra where he was later found dead.

A number of alcohol forums have also been held in Albury. The ABC News reported on one in 2011 where the issue of safety in the community was raised. Although offenses for non-domestic violence and offensive behaviour related to alcohol were down from 2006 to 2010, the forum went over measures to stop further harm from road accidents, domestic violence and youth crimes, including better public transport and earlier closing times for pubs. Star Community mentioned another forum on alcohol-related violence in 2015. Here, the topics were frequent incidents around Dean Street plus the effects of alcohol on domestic violence, vandalism and hooliganism.

Rehab Options for Albury-Wodonga

Unfortunately, the town of Albury-Wodonga is fairly limited when it comes to treatment for those addicted to drugs and alcohol. The ABC News writes that there is an urgent need for a proper centre in the town especially with substances like methamphetamines affecting the community.

There are two government-funded initiatives available locally. The first are the Community Drug and Alcohol Services provided by Albury Wodonga Health. These offer assessment, information, education, referrals and more for those suffering from substance abuse. There are also opioid treatment programs and community withdrawal services available.

The second option is Odyssey House which provides services to those with alcohol and drug dependencies who have health, behavioural and psychological issues. This includes rehab, admissions, assessment, withdrawal and a parent/children program. The Magistrates Early Referral into Treatment (MERIT) is also available for those charged with drug or alcohol-related offences.

Alternatives for Albury-Wodonga Residents

With these limited choices, locals living in Albury-Wodonga are often left to look elsewhere for assistance with their drug and alcohol issues. Rather than seek help in cities such as Melbourne, we recommend checking into a clinic in a country like Thailand where international standards of care are offered at a fraction of the price.

Because you will be seeking help far away from Australia, you won’t have to worry about others in your community finding out either. Siam Rehab Chiang Rai in the north of Thailand offers truly confidential treatment to re-balance your life. Flights there via Sydney take about 13 hours depending on whether you also transfer through Singapore, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. We will be there to pick you up at the airport too, making your journey here as painless as possible!

Drug & Alcohol Rehab Ballarat

Drug & Alcohol Rehab Ballarat

Victoria’s third largest city is a location with plenty of issues with drugs and alcohol. Not only are illicit substances such as amphetamines and ecstasy common but drunken violence also occurs frequently. Being a smaller urban location, there is also a lack of proper rehab facilities for those who want to break free from addiction, forcing them to look elsewhere for treatment.

Illicit Substances within Ballarat

The Courier writes that drug offences in the city increased by 38.4% from 308 to 426 from 2012 to 2013. This makes it the sixth highest drug spot in Victoria with regards to trafficking and possession. Methamphetamines are a big problem although police officers are stumped as to why there is a higher percentage in regional rather than metropolitan regions.

Police have implemented a range of programs to curtail drug use and possession. For instance, Ballarat constables were recently part of a state-wide program targeting drug driving as reported by The Courier. Police hope to test 100,000 motorists across the state by October this year.

Police in the nearby town of Stawell arrested four people in a fluke chain of events, The Stawell Times writes. After intercepting a car on the Western Highway, officers discovered copious amounts of drugs and cash in the vehicle. The couple driving the car were arrested and, when interviewed, revealed that the drugs were for a buyer in Ballarat. This led to two more arrests.

A number of other cases have occurred in Ballarat over the years. The Sydney Morning Herald writes about a local pizza shop owner who was charged with selling $37,000 worth of amphetamines and ecstasy over 12 months. He was sentenced to two years in prison. ABC News also mentions a drug dealer who harassed a woman at the Rainbow Music Festival in Lexton. He was charged with assault, drug possession and trafficking.

Alcohol Consumption and Ballarat

When it comes to heavy drinking, Ballarat has some serious problems. ABC Newswrites that police arrested 60 people in the CBD as part of a crackdown on drunken violence. Arrests led to 48-hour bans from local pubs and bars for each individual. With hundreds of police out and about, the overall message was to have a good time without interfering with anyone else’s fun while doing so.

A six-month lock out trial has also been tested according to ABC News. This experiment improved behaviour in local pubs and on the streets. As well as a 2.30am lockout, alcoholic shots were banned after 1.00am. This program aimed to reduce violence and anti-social behaviour related to alcohol. Although results were positive, there are those who want further restrictions. Liquor Accord gives one example: two councillors who led a charge to ban further new liquor outlets from opening in Ballarat.

Rehab Choices for Ballaratians

Despite these somewhat high statistics for drug and alcohol use, The Courier reports that there is a severe shortage of residential withdrawal beds within Ballarat. This means users have to travel further to Melbourne or Geelong and facilities which may also have long waiting lists. There is one bed which services the Grampians region at the nearby Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, plus there are a few home-based programs although these are typically full as well.

The government-funded Australian Community Support Organisation (ACSO)provides a single entry for drug treatment for Ballarat locals through its Intake and Assessment Service. The organisation also runs a community program offering mental health services to those dependent on drug or alcohol. Another choice is using the mental health services at Ballarat Health which offer referrals, community services, inpatient services and family programs.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Toowoomba

Nestled in the heart of the Darling Downs, the beautiful Garden City has some underlying problems with drugs and alcohol. Small-scale drug use is prevalent amongst the locals with the occasional major drug bust accomplished by the police. There are also some dangers due to excessive drinking in Toowoomba. As it is a rural town, there aren’t too many public facilities available for those wanting to break out of this vicious cycle.

Drugs and the Toowoomba Region

Due to demand within the local population, police in Toowoomba have made several drug busts over the past few years. The Brisbane Times writes about three that took place solely in March 2015. Two men were caught with 12 grams of ice in a local hotel, a man was arrested with 6 grams of speed found in his car, and 27 grams of ice and $8,000 in cash was found in a property raid.

Toowoomba has other, more unusual drug issues too. For instance, The Chroniclesays that illegal steroid trafficking is undeniable within the city. Police foiled a major supply chain, uncovering over 920 vials and 1,850 tablets of steroids alongside 43 bottles of prescription medicines within a local storage shed.

There have been several high profile drug cases in Toowoomba as well. One is found in The Morning Bulletin and involved a local nurse who overdosed on the painkiller, Fentanyl. She had visited 30 different doctors and had been issued with 71 prescriptions of oxycodone, another painkiller. A second was reported in the Courier Mail and involved two famous rugby league players caught within a major cocaine trafficking operation.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Toowoomba

Alcohol Consumption in Toowoomba

While there is excessive drinking in Toowoomba, the damage seems to result mostly in low-level crimes. For instance, The Chronicle reported a break-and-enter by a group of teenagers who tried to steal alcohol from a local tavern. The owner defended his property and was injured in the attack while the thieves got away with a few bottles of liquor.

Drink driving also seems to be an issue. Some instances are fatal with The Chronicle writing about a man who died in a car crash while under the influence. Other instances can be quite humorous. One example is also found in The Chronicle and involves a tradesman getting caught twice for drink driving in the same night.

Finally, excessive drinking can lead to some minor annoyances for those living in Toowoomba. Another article in The Chronicle mentions a local man who pleaded guilty to 12 alcohol-related offences. These included exposing himself in the car park of a major shopping centre and attempting to drive while over the limit.

Rehab Choices for Those in Toowoomba

As it is a rural location, Toowoomba doesn’t have too many publicly-funded alternatives for those who want treatment for substance abuse or dependence. Toowoomba Hospital offers Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services (ATODS) which include assessment, treatment, follow-ups and education about all kinds of legal and illegal substances including cannabis, opioids and amphetamines.

There are also a number of Needle and Syringe Programs in Toowoomba. One is found at the above-mentioned Toowoomba Hospital. There is also a needle dispensing machine at Toowoomba Sexual Health on Peachy Street. These offer a clean, hygienic option for those addicted to certain types of injected drugs.

Finally, the Lives Lived Well program on Neil Street offers alcohol and drug counselling for indigenous and non-indigenous Australians plus is a base for the Queensland Illicit Drug Diversion Initiative. The centre also offers community outreach programs, youth outreach programs, and prison & drug court programs.

Other Options for Toowoomba Residents

For locals who don’t want to enter the public health system but who are unable to afford the private clinics in Toowoomba, we would recommend seeking help overseas. Siam Rehab is located in Chiang Rai, Thailand where the cost of living is far lower than in Australia. Thus, the price of therapy here is far more affordable as well even including the price of the plane ticket. We still offer international standards of care despite the lower rates for therapy.

Thailand is also a great chance to get treated for addiction in a completely confidential environment where no one else knows you. We offer recovery amidst complete privacy within our secluded premises. Flights from Brisbane Airport take 11 or 12 hours with coaches from Toowoomba dropping you off at the departures area. We will pick you up when you arrive at Chiang Rai Airport, making your journey here so much simpler.

Drug & Alcohol Rehab Darwin

Darwin presents a unique picture when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse. Due to its distance, poor governance and lack of infrastructure, consumption rates are fairly high putting heavy drinking and illicit substance abuse on the dangerous side too. As a smaller town, Darwin lacks the proper amount of rehab facilities to help those suffering from this vicious cycle of abuse and dependence.

Drug Consumption within Darwin

There are plenty of illegal substances imported and produced in Darwin which are harming its social fabric. NT News writes about one of the weirdest: SnapChat. Named after the smartphone app, these ecstasy-based tablets hospitalised a number of Darwin locals in 2014. As well as making people seriously ill, the drug causes erratic and irrational behaviour, including aggression and disorientation.

The proximity to some of Australia’s largest Aboriginal settlements also means dealers attempt to smuggle drugs into these communities. Early in 2015, ABC Newswrote about 20g of cannabis found in a lamb pot roast checked into a flight to the Tiwi Islands. The lamb and the drugs were destroyed once found.

Ice is also a major problem in Darwin. In one of the more horrific cases, NT Newswrites about teenage girls offering babysitting services or selling their bodies in exchange for crystal meth. The number of 15 and 16 year olds taking the drug has increased over the years. ABC News writes that local police have asked residents to dob in a dealer to help combat the rising ice plague found in Darwin.

Alcohol Use in Darwin

When it comes to excessive drinking, one doctor at the Royal Darwin Hospital named the city the Broken Jaw Capital of the World due to its high number of alcohol-related injuries, writes The Telegraph. Each year, 350 cases of broken jaws and noses are treated which comes to 17 per 10,000 population. The ABC News gives another example with two Darwin men killed in an automobile crash that police allege involved alcohol.

Each year, 350 cases of broken jaws and noses are treated which comes to 17 per 10,000 population. The ABC News gives another example with two Darwin men killed in an automobile crash that police allege involved alcohol.

Since Darwin has such a problem with alcohol, a number of measures have been put into place. As The Australian reports, restrictions on the service of alcohol started in February 2014. Shots were banned after 1am and a four-drink limit was enforced during happy hours.

Another measure the government has taken to combat alcohol in Darwin is mandatory treatment for repeat offenders who are taken into custody because of alcohol abuse. The Northern Territory government says this is a harm reduction strategy which sees an individual go into treatment for up to three months. A range of development programs are offered during this time.

Drug Rehab Programs in Darwin

Despite these issues, Darwin doesn’t have too many government-funded initiatives to help combat addiction. One option is the Alcohol and Other Drugs Program which seeks to minimise harm related to these substances through prevention, education and treatment. Individuals and families living in Darwin can make use of these services.

The Employee Assistance Service Australia (EASA) also runs an Alcohol & Other Drugs program that provides education and counselling to those affected by alcohol and other substances. These sessions are meant to reduce harm associated with these activities and are customised to each individual. It is a government-funded program open to those living in Darwin.

Finally, the Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services (CAAPS) is a service for Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders who suffer from substance misuse and abuse. It offers a number of services including a community outreach program, a volatile substance abuse program and the healthy families program. CAAPS is open to individuals, including children, as well as families.

Alternative Options for Darwin Residents

These public offerings aren’t for everyone though, so what can the average Darwin local do? Private clinics based nearby can be expensive with long waiting lists and so we recommend looking overseas instead. The country of Thailand offers numerous great clinics such as Siam Rehab which provide world-class rehab programs that are very affordable. A lower cost of living means you can gain treatment without putting pressure on your wallet.

Centres such as Siam  offer higher levels of confidentiality as well which can be a relief to those living in a small town like Darwin.

Most of the addiction treatment centres in Cairns and Australia as a whole have long waiting list or are unaffordable. If you need help NOW, think of Siam Rehab in Thailand. The largest majority of our clients come from Australia for treatment. We have a short, or no waiting list and are a fraction of the cost of a similar facility in Australia. Call now, we can help.

Cairns seems to be a city that has attracted some serious problems with drugs and alcohol. Not only is there an exceptionally large number of traffickers caught smuggling illicit substances but violent incidents related to drinking also seem to be common. There are obviously a large number of locals requiring assistance with battling addiction in both these areas. Fortunately, there are a number of choices for those looking for treatment and rehab.

Drug Consumption in Cairns

Thanks to its party scene, tourist crowds, and tropical weather, Cairns is a town with a heavy drug problem.

In fact, Cairns Post reports that around 120 new drugs have appeared there since June 2011. These substances are created to have the same effects as cocaine, amphetamines, and LSD yet are tweaked so as to skirt the law. They can pose extra dangers because users aren’t sure what they’re ingesting.

Trafficking is also quite common with the ABC News reporting on at least four incidents: A South Australian male was arrested at the airport with 10kg of cannabis, a former bikie supplied amphetamines and cannabis for nine months, a north Queensland man was caught trafficking cocaine, MDMA and steroids, and a Canadian woman was caught flying in with over 5.5kg of amphetamines.

According to an assessment by the Crime and Corruption Commission of Queensland, Cairns is one of the state’s most prevalent areas for cocaine activity.

The study also found a high occurrence of spinning (combining tobacco and cannabis) and bucket bongs.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Cairns

Alcohol Use in the Cairns Area

When it comes to alcohol consumption, the Cairns Post writes that more than 25% of locals drink a risky level of booze, making it one of the state’s worst areas for alcoholism. In fact, 55% of those treated at the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) in their Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service (ATODS) were there because of excessive drinking.

With these high levels of consumption, violence is very common.  In fact the National Drug Law Enforcement Fund reported that about 25% of all violent injuries treated at Cairns Base Hospital were linked with the Cairns late night entertainment district. In general, alcohol is connected with the majority of injuries occurring each night.

A number of measures have been implemented or proposed to limit the dangers of alcohol. For instance, Liquor Accord writes that the local council has taken a hard-line with local pubs and clubs. Those who commit an offence will be barred from all premises which have signed this agreement a move which has successfully reduced violent incidents. Gavin King, ex-member for Cairns, also talked with residents who wanted tougher penalties, ID scanners and greater safety features to combat this issue.

Rehab Options in the Cairns Region

The good news is that Cairns has a variety of government-funded treatment facilities for those suffering from addiction although, but as ABC News reports, some of these have experienced problems before.

Queensland Health also operates the Drug and Alcohol Brief Intervention Team (DABIT), an initiative at Cairns Hospital, Gold Coast Hospital and Royal Brisbane Hospital. This service provides short-term interventions to those with drug and alcohol problems who haven’t received treatment. It is aimed at reducing substance dependence and providing relief to the staff there

Other Choices for Cairns Residents

These options don’t quite fit all demographics however, which leaves certain types of addicts at a loss of where to go. Private clinics are out because of their high costs, so the only choice is to go into rehab overseas in a country like Thailand. Here, living costs are low which means that the price-tag attached to these programs is very affordable.

Clinics such as Siam Rehab, which is found in Chiang Rai, Thailand, also offer a great deal of privacy. If you don’t want people in Cairns to learn about your fight with addiction, simply check into our first-class treatment centre. Flights can take as little as 12 hours with a stopover in Bangkok. To make things even easier, we will meet you at the airport and drive you straight to our drug rehab clinic.

Physical and Psychological Effects of Cocaine Addiction

Physical and Psychological Effects of Cocaine Addiction

Blow, snow, Charlie, white lady, powder; or otherwise known as, cocaine. It’s a drug that peaked during the 80’s and 90’s, but still remains one of the go-to substances for people around the world. Cocaine, derived from the coca plant (and not related to the same plant which produces cocoa beans), is a drug that produces euphoric like effects and is highly addictive. From club goers, models and late night workers to bankers and executives, cocaine remains a popular drug of choice. Movies like Blow, Scarface and Casino have glorified its use, but when the high diminishes, reality kicks in. The effects of a cocaine addiction are nothing to mess around with. Paranoia, extreme cravings and memory loss are just a few challenges which a user will likely face.

How the High works in the brain

The intensity and duration of cocaine depends on whether it is snorted or injected into the users’ veins, but in any case, it is extremely addictive with each blow lasting for 15-30 minutes. Rapid absorption through the blood or nasal tissues means that cocaine is fast acting. A user will feel the effects in just a few seconds. Deep within the brain, chemical receptors are responding to the drug. These neurotransmitters (nerves which communicate with one another) block vital chemicals like dopamine and serotonin from being reabsorbed. As a result, these chemicals build up and cause the euphoric like sensations. This is the primary reason an individual will continue to use, and the effects of a cocaine addiction really start to set in.

The psychological effects of a cocaine addiction

With frequent cocaine use, the blood flow becomes much slower in the brain compared to a non-user. Research carried out by Harvard Medical School shows that it only takes a small amount of cocaine to constrict blood vessels in the brain. Overtime, this can lead to brain malfunctioning and even long term damage. Memory problems (or loss), cognitive disorders and a full on stroke are a real threat to an abuser of the drug.

Brain scans of cocaine users have revealed that regular use lights up areas which are associated with both cravings and use. According to one researcher, just thinking about cocaine can cause a person to use. These scans have also shown a significant decrease in overall dopamine which can lead to feelings of depression, loneliness, stress, anxiety and fear.

In extreme cases, all of these effects can cause the individual to have suicidal or violent thoughts. Paranoia, lashing out, confusion or erratic behavior is common, and when a users’ body and mind cannot cope with everything going on, they can end up in a cocaine psychosis. This is a time in which the user loses touch on all reality.

Ultimately, the high (and overall addiction) is so strong that even with all these detrimental effects, a user will be unable to reliably predict or control the extent of which they will want or use the drug. Further studies are showing that throughout long periods of non use (like those during or after cocaine treatment) the memory of using is extremely prevalent and can trigger enormous cravings which could result in a relapse.

The physical effects of a cocaine addiction

The psychological symptoms that occur from prolonged cocaine use are vast and debilitating, but so too are those which effect an individual on the physical level. The different routes of administration produce different physical effects. For example, snorting the drug can lead to a temporary or permanent loss of smell. Holes, which alter the breathing, can develop deep in the nasal cavity. Chronic inflammation, runny nose or infection can develop from irritation of the septum.

When a user injects cocaine, track marks can appear on the skin. These, often painful areas, can easily become infected. If untreated, permanent damage to the skin can occur. Moreover, diseases like hepatitis and HIV are spread through needle sharing and can be an issue with cocaine users who inject the drug.

The majority of all cocaine users lose their appetite and desire for food. As a result, weight loss and malnutrition can arise. The physical effects of a cocaine addiction continue on and include extreme strain on the heart which can lead to heart attacks, heart disease and a deadly abnormal rhythm which cannot be reversed. Kidney and gastrointestinal damage, chronic lung inflammation and sexual dysfunction are further issues a user (both past and present) of cocaine may face.

The effects of a cocaine addiction are troubling; often the user will require some form of treatment. Even people who boast control over their own self have the potential to abuse and become addicted to this powerful drug. In reality, there is no safefrequency for using cocaine and no one can predict whether or not a person will become an addict. The psychological and physical effects of a cocaine addiction are so extreme that they can quickly erode an individual’s life. Treatment is essential and can help a person to re-wire their neurotransmitters, work through core issues and walk on a clear path to freedom from the restraints of cocaine.

Fortunately there is help available for people suffering with cocaine addiction. There are a considerable number of drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres around the world that specialize in treating people suffering with cocaine addiction and others substance abuse. An excellent option to consider for English speaking clients is Siam Rehab Thailand. At Siam you can undergo an effective drug and alcohol rehabilitation program for a fraction of the price you would need to pay in the USA, UK or Australia. Call now we can help.

This small town has some of the highest consumption rates in the state with police working hard to halt the trafficking of illicit substances and excessive binge drinking. The good news is that there are a number of public treatment programmes available although these can be filled to capacity due to heavy demand.

Drug Consumption within Townsville

The Townsville Bulletin doesn’t hold back when it writes that Townsville is the drug capital of regional Queensland. It also backs up this claim by writing that the centre experienced 548 drug-related offences in 2012-13. This was the first time that more people were arrested for supply than for possession (240 compared to 220). Townsville also had 35 prosecutable trafficking offences and 47 for drug production during this time. All these figures are above the Queensland average.

The Australia-wide ice epidemic has reached Townsville as well with the Bulletin reporting that the demand for rehab by amphetamine addicts rose by 165% from 2010 to 2014. Again, this is higher than the state average. ABC News says police have done their best to stop this trend, writing about a 2014 drug bust where ice, ecstasy and cannabis worth $200,000 was seized.

There are also other ways in which these issues emerge within Townsville. For instance, the Townsville Bulletin reports that parents and relatives are picking up and dropping off their children at school while high. In July 2015, 76 drivers tested positive to drugs. Cannabis was common amongst the older generation while young parents were taking methamphetamines. Driving while high has also caused accidents in the region with the Townsville Bulletin writing about a man crashing while under the influence, killing his partner instantly.

Alcohol and the Townsville Community

There is also a real problem with excess drinking in Townsville. The Courier Mail reports that the corner of Flinders and Kings Streets is one of the most violent places in the state when it comes to alcohol-related assaults. In 2013, there were 78 assaults in the area. This number balloons out to 1,067 attacks over the past ten years.

One example of an alcohol-related assault in this beachside city is found in the Townsville Bulletin. Here, an intoxicated male repeatedly stabbed a charity worker outside the Rollingstone Hotel. While the man was deemed mentally ill, excessive consumption of alcohol was said to have played a major role in the attack.

Police have also stumbled upon illegal alcohol production in Townsville. In 2014, Pedestrian reported on the seizure of 60 goon bags from a vessel at Forrest Beach Boat Ramp. 63 kilograms of cask wine were confiscated. This was said to be sly-grog, poor quality moonshine that reportedly gives the drinker an awful hangover.

Rehab Options for Townsville Residents

With regards to public treatment facilities, ABC News says that demand in Townsville is exceeding supply. With 40% of clients in rehab for ice, a drug which takes a long time for a full detox, local centres have waiting lists that can last for several months. Extra funding from the government is needed to tackle this problem effectively.

Fortunately, there are a number of other public services run in Townsville that partially make up for this gap. For instance, the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service (ATODS) offers education, assessment, counselling, treatment and referral for those suffering from addiction.  Legal Aid also recommends the Queensland Indigenous Alcohol Diversion Program where those charged with alcohol-related offenses can seek assistance as part of bail. The program includes both detox and treatment.

What Are Meth Sores?

Long term methamphetamine users ofter have sores on their bodies that are a result of their addiction and drug use. Meth Sores are often called; crank sores, speed bumps or meth mites. Meth sores are one symptom of long term methamphetamine abuse and are caused by people picking or scratching at their skin and in some extreme case digging into the skin with knives, etc. Believing there are bugs on or under the skin is a common delusion of people using meth long term. The medical term for a feeling that their are bugs on or under your skin is Formication. Meth sores are caused because people are having a tactile hallucination due to the drug use and since they are in a delusional state from the drug use combined with lack of sleep they will pick at or dig into their skin to try to remove the infestation. Users may also have a visual hallucination and there have been many reports of people on methamphetamine claiming to be able to see the “meth mites” boring into their skin.

Causes of Meth Sores

As we read above meth sores are caused by people believing there are bugs on or under the skin, this feeling and belief comes from the psychological effects of the meth use as well as some of the physical changes in the body when someone uses methamphetamine. Meth raises the body temperature and can cause excessive sweating, with the sweating and your body eliminating toxins there is a high likely hood of dehydration. The excess sweating can be acidic, when the sweat evaporates it dries the skin leaving it itchy and irritable. Combine itchy skin with hallucinations and a delusional state and the substance abuser can start picking at the skin causing the meth sores.

Dangers of Meth Sores

Since meth sores cause open ulcers and wounds on the skin there is always a high risk of infection to the area and even once the person has created the sore they are more often then not likely to continue picking at the open wound which makes for a high likely hood of introducing bacteria or viruses into the wound. With open soars on the body people with meth sores have a much higher chance of contracting commutable diseases such as, HIV or Hepatitis C. If the sores do become infected there is a high chance of it becoming sepsis, at this stage a person with meth mites will need to go on anti-bacterial medication to ensure that sepsis does not evolve into septic shock or gangrene.

Treatment for Meth Sores

Obviously the best way to treat meth sores is to stop using meth and get medical treatment for the physical issues you are experiencing. In the interim however, the best thing you can do is be sure to keep the meth sores clean and covered with sterilised bandages. Seeking advice from your doctor is also highly recommended and if there is a chance of infection he/she will probably put you on some from of antibiotics to help stop the infection or even as a preventative if you haven’t developed an infection yet.

Meth Sores and Meth Psychosis

Amphetamine Induced Psychosis is a psychosis brought on by the use of meth and other amphetamines. Fortunately it is usually curable in most people using meth and experiencing meth sores due to the psychosis. The primary way of helping is as mentioned above to first get the person to stop using methamphetamine. Generally in a few days to a few weeks from last use the psychosis will subside and the meth sores will start to heal over. There is other physical and cognitive damage however from long term meth use that are beyond the scope of this article. If you are experiencing Methamphetamine induced psychosis it is very important that you seek professional help. You can make the first step by checking into the local emergency room at the hospital.

Drug & Alcohol Rehab Geelong

With regards to drugs and alcohol, Geelong has some serious issues with both. These may be due to its proximity to Melbourne and the fact that it is a smaller urban centre. Regardless of the reasons though, there are plenty living there who indulge in illicit substances, binge drinking, etc. who need assistance to stop the vicious cycle associated with addiction.

Geelong & the Consumption of Drugs

By far, Geelong’s biggest drug problem seems to be methamphetamines. The vast majority of local news stories seem to be about this dangerous substance. One example is from The Age about a woman who fatally overdosed on ice while her friends continued to inject around her. The Geelong Advertiser also writes that ice is available at approximately 50% of all teenage parties with more people using than not.

Geelong police saw a 36.3% increase in drug offences occurring from 2011 to 2012, according to News.com.au. The city also suffers from Breaking Bad Syndrome with more meth labs being started in local backyards. Finally, ABC News wrote about Geelong police seizing drugs at premises associated with the outlaw bikie gang, the Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Geelong also suffers with regards to other illicit substances. For instance, a 25 year old prisoner from the Marngoneet Correctional Centre overdosed on methadone in 2014. The Geelong Advertiser writes that 6.7% of prisoners tested positive for drug use. In addition to this, 120 former prisoners had a fatal overdose after their release from 2000 to 2010.

Another drug causing problems is the prescription drug, OxyContin. According to ABC News, this is a major issue for Winchelsea, a small town found to the west of Geelong.

Alcohol and the Geelong Community

Despite only having a population of approximately 180,000, Geelong has one of the country’s worst rates of heavy drinking. Monash University looked at individuals with a blood alcohol content (BAC) greater than 0.1 in their study, Patron Offending and Intoxication in Night-Time Entertainment Districts (POINTED), and found that Geelong had the highest average in Australia. The report also found that 81% of individuals reported pre-drinking before going out. Additionally, the Herald Sun wrote that 22% of Geelong drinkers were involved in verbal, physical or sexual aggression related to alcohol.

Drug & Alcohol Support in Geelong

Geelong has a number of initiatives aimed at reducing damage from drug and alcohol use. Deakin University issued a clampdown on alcohol sales to underage customers which resulted in a dramatic decrease in supply. The trial commenced after it was seen that 41% of Geelong youth used alcohol at 14 years old with initial tests revealing that 80% of bottle-shop staff sold alcohol without checking IDs beforehand.

The Sydney Morning Herald also writes about the Barwon Safe Parties Project which educates parents about how to safely host teenage parties. In a region-wide crackdown, this initiative will help the 90% of parents who wish to host a safe party but who don’t have the proper information on how to accomplish this.

Funded by the government and associated with the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, headspace provides early intervention services for those dependent on alcohol and other substances. Additionally, the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria runs three outlets of the Victorian Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) in Geelong. One of these is found at the Geelong Hospital run by Barwon Health. The hospital also includes other programmes including treatment, interventions and support.

Alternatives to Rehab in Geelong

One problem with seeking assistance within Geelong is that the public clinics there can be very busy. In a Geelong Advertiser story, the Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS) director said that increased demand had meant that their beds were full with waiting lists of several months. A surge in ice use was partially to blame as individuals were taking much longer to detox.

Instead of going to an expensive private clinic in Geelong, it is better to seek help a nation like Thailand where the waiting lists are shorter and the final bill is a fraction of the price. Siam Rehab offers international standards of treatment in the beautiful North of Thailand.
