Cheltenham Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Addiction in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire has seen a significant increase in alcohol-related problems, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, there were 70 alcohol-specific deaths, almost double the 36 recorded in 2019, and the highest number since records began in 2006. This marked a 15-year high for alcohol-related deaths in the area. Furthermore, alcohol was a contributing factor in 240 deaths across Gloucestershire in 2020, an increase from 208 in the previous year1.

The pandemic, along with financial pressures and social isolation due to lockdown, led some people to drink more heavily, while treatment services were disrupted. Data collected during this period showed higher levels of abstinence from alcohol since the first lockdown but also an increase in those reporting higher levels of drinking (greater than 35 units per week)1.

According to Dr Richard Piper, chief executive of Alcohol Change UK, as many as one in four people drank more in 2020, potentially forming new harmful drinking habits. He emphasized the need for more preventative measures, such as clearer labeling, Minimum Unit Pricing, and sensible limits to marketing alcohol to children1.

Three causes were identified as being responsible for 96% of all alcohol-specific deaths registered in 2020: alcoholic liver disease (78%), mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of alcohol (12%), and external causes of deaths, including accidental poisoning by and exposure to alcohol (6%)1. Vanessa Hebditch, director of policy at the British Liver Trust, warned that the increase in alcohol consumption and disruption to alcohol support services during the pandemic had led to more deaths from alcohol-related liver disease1.

As for drug use in Cheltenham, there is limited recent data available. The last comprehensive data was from 2019 and it showed that drug use was a concern in the community, with county lines gangs and related crime being an issue. Preferred drugs included cannabis, followed by cocaine, crack cocaine, opiates, and ecstasy. More recent data and strategies to address drug use in the area are needed.

Rehab Treatment Options in Cheltenham

Cheltenham offers a variety of drug and alcohol treatment options through both the public and private sector. The National Health Service (NHS) delivers inpatient and outpatient services as necessary, which are free of charge. These treatments might include detoxification, therapy, counselling, among others. However, like other NHS services, there might be a waiting list, which can be challenging when dealing with addiction and the urgency to seek help. It’s also important to mention that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these services were disrupted, potentially extending wait times further1.

For those requiring immediate assistance, Cheltenham offers a range of harm reduction services. Change Grow Live and Turning Point have local branches and provide services such as community detoxification, counselling, training, and ongoing support. In addition, AA or NA meetings are held weekly in Cheltenham. If necessary, further organisations and services can be accessed outside the area.

Private rehab is another viable option, with facilities in Cheltenham and nearby areas offering these services. Generally, private rehab facilities maintain a better staff-to-patient ratio than NHS rehabs, and can deliver more individualised care and attention. The typical cost for rehab in Cheltenham ranges between £6,000 and £9,000 per month, although this can vary. Facilities in larger cities such as London or Manchester, or those offering luxury services, might have higher costs.

It’s worth noting that Gloucestershire has recently seen a 15-year high in alcohol-related deaths1, with alcohol contributing to 240 deaths in 2020, up from 208 the year before1. This increase has been linked to increased alcohol consumption during the pandemic, as well as disruption to alcohol support services1. The main causes of alcohol-specific deaths in 2020 were alcoholic liver disease (78%), mental and behavioural disorders due to alcohol use (12%), and external causes, including accidental alcohol poisoning (6%)1.

Dr Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Change UK, has called for urgent action from the government, suggesting that clearer labelling, minimum unit pricing, and sensible limits to marketing alcohol to children could help prevent alcohol-related harm1.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, there are still numerous resources available in Cheltenham for individuals seeking assistance with drug and alcohol issues. Whether through public services like the NHS, local harm reduction initiatives, or private rehab facilities, help is available.
